NEC Term Definitions

Division 1, Normally Hazardous: Where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapors, or liquids (compustible dust - class II) can exist all of the time under normal operating conditions.

Division 2, Not Normally Hazardous: Where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapors, or liquids (compustible dust - class II) are not likely to exist under normal operating conditions.

Flammable Gasses: Group A - Acetylene, Group B - Hydrogen, Group C - Ethylene, Group D - Propane

Combustible Dusts: Group E - Metal dust, Group F - Coal dust, Group G - Grain dust

Ignitable Fibers & Flyings: Examples are wood, paper, or cotton processing.

IEC Term Definitions

Zone 0, Continuous Hazard: Where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapors, or liquids can exist all of the time under normal operating conditions.

Zone 1, Intermittent Hazard: Where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapors, or liquids are likely to exist under normal operating conditions.

Zone 2, Abnormal Condition Hazard: Where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapors, or liquids are not likely to exist under normal operating conditions.

* General purpose enclosures are permitted for some applications by paragraph 500-2(a) of the NEC if the equipment does not constitute a source of ignition under normal operating conditions.

** Subject to AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) approval.
